Base Rate

Also known as: Bank Base Rate, Benchmark Prime Lending Rate

Legacy benchmark used by banks for loan pricing before MCLR was introduced in 2016.

Detailed Explanation

Base Rate was the reference rate below which banks could not lend to any customer (except those permitted by RBI). Introduced in 2010 to replace the Prime Lending Rate system, it was intended to improve transparency in loan pricing. However, banks had significant discretion in calculation methodology, making it difficult for borrowers to understand rate movements. Most banks have discontinued base rate for new loans, but existing borrowers may still be on this system.
